Bye Bye Baby?

Well, today is the day.  20th April 2012.  The day BMI becomes part of British Airways, and sadly it seems the day BMIBaby's fate is sealed.  There were hopes right until the last minute that a saviour may come forward to take on BMIBaby, but with a fleet of aging aircraft that are all leased, and no valuable slots, all interested parties pulled out.

Aeroflot Takes Off with Snow on the Wings

OK, I'm not normallty tempted to 'band-wagon' with things such as aviation safety, but on this occasion I feel I have to.  A post on the PPRune forums pointed me in the direction of this video, showing an Aeroflot Airbus A320 taking off from Sheremetyevo, Moscow, with the wings covered in snow.

The Code Share Curse

I am about to begin two weeks of flights back and forth across Europe to Vienna, from Birmingham.  This in itself is a pain as I actually need to be in Bratislava, Slovakia, but with no option other than a couple of Ryanair flights a week, I have to do a rather convoluted routing across Europe on Star Alliance to Vienna, 40 miles up the road, but I digress.

My routing is BHX-ZRH-VIE with Swiss/Helvetic, VIE-BRU-BHX with Brussels Airlines, BHX-DUS-VIE with Lufthansa and Austrian, and VIE-BRU-BHX with Brussels Airlines again.  All flights are booked via Expedia, and here is where the problems begin.

Twice to Vienna - Star Alliance across Europe

As some of you may remember from my previous report, I had cause to visit Brest, France to undertake a training course for my company. Cue three years later, and in January 2012 I was asked to go to another course, this time being held in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Naturally, my first thoughts turned to what routing I could take to get there, and I was disappointed to note that the only flights directly to Bratislava these days are on Ryanair, running once or twice a week. Since this course was due to last two weeks, this would really not work out, so I turned my thoughts to planning some flights on proper airlines. Work agreed I could return home for the weekend, meaning my four flights would turn into eight, and I could set about finding a medley of interesting flights.

An Open Letter to Airliners.net

I would like to draw your attention to an open letter penned by Stefan of NetAirspace.com.

A thread was recently created, discussed and locked on the forums of another aviation website, Airliners.net.  In this thread, the owners of the site launch into an attack on the aviation community at large, who choose to participate in any website other than theirs.  If you are not a member of this site you will not be able to read the thread as it is on their site related forum (only open to members), so please allow me to paraphrase the important parts here for your reference.
